Red deer
There are several subspecies of red deer in Europe, while the Central European red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) and the Carpathian red deer (Cervus elaphus montanus) are found on our territory.
Adult individuals of these two subspecies clearly differ in size, coat colour, shape, and weight of antlers. However, most local populations are so crossbred that classification into a subspecies is often difficult. In the valley of the Danube, Váh, and Kysuca rivers, the border of the natural distribution of both our subspecies runs. Central Slovakia is home to hybrids of these subspecies. The pure form of the Carpathian forest deer is found mainly in eastern Slovakia and is one of the largest and most prized as a trophy. The range of the Central European red deer goes from this imaginary border to Western Europe.
An adult deer has a body length of 180-240 cm and a weight of 160 to 300 kg. The female (the hind) is naturally smaller. The body length of a hind is on average 160-200 cm and its weight ranges from 80 to 200 kg. The size of a particular individual depends on the subspecies, age, and nutrient content of the environment in which it lives.
Every proper hunt requires a lot of knowledge, experience, renunciation, and passion, getting up early, arriving at night... It doesn't matter if it's a joint or individual hunt, whether it's a wild boar or deer, hare or pheasant hunt, ...Because it is always a strong emotional experience for the hunter.
The deer is deservedly considered the king of our mountains. That is why deer hunting is perceived by our hunting community as the ultimate experience on the imaginary hunting ranking.
In Slovakia, deer rutting takes place from mid-September to mid-October. In a particular area, the rut usually lasts 2-3 weeks. Hunting a deer in this period is rated by many hunters as a "top" hunting experience.
